@ctume - Nouakchott, February 21, 2017

Created on November 18, 2002, the association ACTUME (Association Against Tuberculosis and Endemic Diseases) based in Bordeaux, operates in France and Mauritania in the field of health. The missions are among others:

  • Conquer tuberculosis and endemic diseases (AIDS, Malaria, Bilharzia…);
  • Support health projects in Africa.

ACTUME has partners in France and Mauritania. In France, we work with: Mairie de Courbevoie, the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS); Rivage NDiawane de Tékane, the Departmental Committee against tuberculosis 92, AQAFI, Association Zéro Violence, Regional Council of Aquitaine, Association Mana, City of Bordeaux; Aquitaine Network for Development and International Solidarity. In Mauritania, our partners are: the Ministry of Health, the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Program, the Tékane Health Association and the Maghama Development Association.

This partnership made it possible to organize February 17 to 19, 2017, a health caravan in the communes of Maghama and Tékane, in Mauritania. This action is organized in collaboration with the association for the Development of Maghama and the Association Santé Tékane with the support of the Communication Agency "Swahifri Consulting", the association Rivages NDiawane, the Ministry of Health in Mauritania, Le Sothiou: Association d'Aide au Développement Dentaire, Pharma Product Manufacturing (PPM) specializing in the distribution of medicines and Mauritel.

The main objective is to first provide free care to the populations of the various municipalities concerned, then to detect and list certain common pathologies in order to take care of or refer needy patients to the most suitable health structures.

The specialties covered by this humanitarian action are: general medicine, stomatology, cardiology, gynecology, ophthalmology, pediatrics, dermatology.

As a reminder, from 2010 to 2015, ACTUME, with the support of the Regional Council of Aquitaine, launched its loyalty project for tuberculosis patients lost to follow-up. This project had 3 major components:

  1. Training of community workers;
  2. Awareness and care of local populations;
  3. Support for tuberculosis patients under treatment.

As part of the awareness-raising component, ACTUME led 4 health caravans in Mauritania which made it possible to consult:

  • 2017: 1910 patients in Maghama, 2141 in Tékane or 4051 consultations;
  • 2016: 2502 patients in Maghama, 3285 in Tékane, i.e. 5787 consultations;
  • 2015: 2,682 patients in Tékane;
  • 2014: 1,720 patients in Tékane;
  • 2013: 720 patients in Tékane.

After seven years of activities in the field, we believe that our overarching objectives have almost been achieved. Our prospects are now to identify local relay structures that we could support as part of our future projects in Mauritania. By way of example, we can among others: the Association for the Development of Maghama and the Association Santé Tékane.
